Male pattern baldness is a progressive condition. If left untreated, it generally decreases the amount and density of hair on your head as time goes on. What we see in Gordon is a progression from a receding hairline back to a fuller and more youthful hairline.

Gordon Ramsay’s Hair Loss Timeline

By reviewing pictures of him through his career, we can analyse his hair loss and any changes in his hair since.

Earlier career: temple recession

If we look at photographs of Ramsay from the 2000s, we see that he had slight hairline recession with some subtle hair loss at his temples. This is the classic “M” shape of male pattern baldness, which is a hallmark of the condition.

Between 2010 and 2011

During this time period, his hair was visibly denser with his hairline tracing a more youthful shape. The hair that was restored looks natural, with previous areas of recession and baldness no longer noticeable.

2014: Further refinement along frontal hairline

He retains the previous improvements, but there is a subtle touch up as other balding areas appear to have been covered over. This likely marks a second hair transplant as a follow-up procedure to the first for further refinement.

Natural hairline maintained

After his suspected second hair transplant, he has a full head of hair with no signs of current hair loss. Having a hair transplant will not permanently stop male pattern baldness from progressing in areas adjacent to the transplanted hair. 

Gordon Ramsay is likely taking medications in order to prevent further thinning in the future. Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride are usually recommended after a hair transplant to prevent further shedding and produce more lasting results.

What Type of Hair Transplant Did Gordon Ramsay Have? 

Ramsay didn’t go through a period of shaved hair after his transplant, based on the evidence that we have. From the dates where he is likely to have had his procedure, Ramsay maintained a longer hairstyle. 

In 2011, Ramsay was spotted soon after leaving the hair transplant clinic with David Beckham. He kept his regular longer hairstyle, more or less how he usually styled his hair at the time. His head was not shaven as you would expect from a more traditional hair transplant technique. 

Similarly, in 2014, the bulk of Ramsay’s hair seemed untouched apart from some redness around his obscured hairline. Within a few months after the surgery, Ramsay changed his hairstyle from a pulled-forward fringe to styling his hair up and displaying a very healthy, full hairline.
