What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Transplantation, or FUT, is a hair restoration procedure in which a thin strip of skin bearing healthy donor hair is removed from the back of the head, and the individual follicles within it are moved to areas of thinning or loss. This is also known as the strip method.
Once the strip of scalp with the hair follicles is removed from the back of the head, the follicles are dissected under a microscope and inserted into the recipient area where there is thinning or balding, such as a receding hairline or temples, as well as a balding crown.

On the day of your procedure, you'll be greeted by our friendly team before moving to the treatment area. First, your surgeon will draw on your new hairline and mark the areas on your scalp where the grafts will be taken from. A local anaesthetic will be applied to the scalp to numb the donor area being operated on, and the FUT surgery can begin.

FUT or FUE Hair Transplant: Which Is Right for You?
The decision between an FUT or an FUE hair transplant depends on the following:
- How much donor hair a patient has?
- How much hair a patient would like to shave?
- How much hair needs to be transplanted in 1 session of surgery?
In patients with limited donor hair, an FUT procedure can be a sensible option to maximise the extraction of available donor hair. This can sometimes be an effective option for patients undergoing repair surgery.
FUT surgery requires less hair to be shaved in the donor site, allowing long hair to be kept styled as normal. This can be beneficial in female and transgender patients who have long hair and don’t want to shave it for their hair transplant.
In FUT surgery, more follicles can be transplanted in 1 session of surgery. This helps patients with large areas of hair loss to address their concern in 1 sitting of surgery.
FUT Technique Timeline
Patients can expect the following process when exploring an FUT hair transplant at our clinic:

How Many Grafts Will You Need?
The number of grafts needed will depend on your needs. Each graft we take from your scalp will have one to four hair follicles on it. We can take up to 3,000 grafts per treatment.
The minimum number of grafts taken is 500. The general number of grafts taken is 1500-3000 but this can vary depending on your needs.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all when it comes to the number of grafts used. However, we would say on average that 1500-2000 grafts provide our patients with the end results they're looking for. The number of grafts right for you will be discussed during your consultation, where we'll also confirm the costs based on the number of grafts needed.

Just like the FUE hair transplant, this technique can last a lifetime when done correctly at a reputable clinic.
The hair follicles transplanted from the donor areas are resistant to the hormones that cause hair loss. With post-surgery care of your scalp, your hair transplant can last up to 10-20 years or more.
The Strip method is different from a FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) hair transplant. This procedure uses a strip of your scalp to remove the necessary follicles, whereas in an FUE hair transplant, the hair follicles are removed individually from the scalp.
An FUT procedure will leave a thin strip of scar tissue in the donor area that requires hair to be kept long to conceal it and has a longer recovery period.
An FUE hair transplant leaves small circular scars that are concealed even at a shorter hair length and has a shorter recovery period.
However, a FUT hair transplant has many benefits, such as:
- Removing lots of hair follicles at one time
- Your hair doesn't need to be shaved as much as with an FUE hair transplant, and significantly more hair can be transplanted in one procedure, helping you achieve your goals for your hair loss condition faster.
