As Hibs legend Steven Whittaker makes headlines for taking the Dunfermline player-coach role, many gazes have turned towards his hairline. A look back over his playing career will show that hair loss began for him at a young age, with recent pictures sparking discussions about how he came to spot a now lush head of hair.
In this article, we will explore Stephen’s hair transformation, the potential techniques used to get him there, and the quality of the results achieved.
Steven Whittaker’s Hair Transplant – Before And After
The pictures above are a testament to Steven Whittaker’s Benjamin Button-like transformation. He’s managed to pull off the rare feat of looking younger with age, and this can be attributed to the changes made in his previously receding hairline.

Steven opted for an FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant. With this technique, healthy hair follicles are taken from the back and sides of the head (the donor area) and moved to areas of hair loss. Where the hairs are removed, patients are left with pinprick dot scars (less than 1mm in diameter) sprinkled throughout the donor area, which are effectively covered as new hair grows over to disguise the scarring.
Full results of FUE hair transplant surgery are generally seen within 12 to 18 months.
Depending on the number of grafts, FUE hair transplants usually take a day to complete, with larger cases over 3000 grafts requiring 2 days of surgery either consecutively or spaced at least 6 months apart. You can use a hair graft calculator to determine the number of grafts required for your hair transplant.
For pain relief, a local anaesthetic is used to numb the entire scalp and ensure the procedure is as painless as possible from start to finish.

Steven Whittaker’s hair transplant was a tremendous success. His fuller hairline today gives him a more vibrant and youthful look. For camera-facing and public figure careers, having a hair transplant can help boost self-confidence and stage presence. A great example of this effect can be seen in Mo Salah, who has experienced significant performance boosts following his rumoured hair transplant.
Research studies have shown to associate male pattern baldness is associated with psychological disturbances like depression, anxiety, and poor self-image.

While medically researched hair loss treatments that successfully slow hair loss do exist, many people have unfortunately sought “miracle cures” from less-than-reputable sources to address their hair loss. Despite this, hair transplant surgery remains the most effective way to restore a lost hairline and revitalise luscious locks.
Take a look at more examples of FUE before and after pictures to get a better idea of the successes and results of this hair restoration technique.
