Mo Salah’s Hairline Over The Years

As a professional football player, he has been photographed over the years, so it can be very easy to analyse even subtle changes to his hairline. We have reviewed his hairline from his early playing career to see what has changed over the years.

Early Career Years

His early career took him from Al Mokawloon to Basel, and then to Chelsea, with loan spells at Fiorentina and Roma after limited game time at Chelsea.

At this time, he had a full head of thick and curly afro hair with no visible sign of hair loss. Like most players with signature looks or style, his curly hair was part of his personal signature.  He would usually style the curly hair forward, dangling down his face. This was later used to likely conceal early signs of hair loss.

2019 – 2023

At this time, photographic evidence points to gradual recession at both the left and right sides of his temples, creating an “M” shape. At this stage, our surgeons assess his hair loss as Norwood 2-3.

For most men, this is the most common pattern of hair loss, also known as male pattern baldness ¹. Male pattern baldness is a genetically inherited condition where certain hair follicles on the scalp are sensitive to a hormone called DHT. 

By binding to these sensitive follicles, DHT slowly shrinks them in a process called miniaturisation. Each time the hair grows again, it comes back a little finer, shorter, and weaker. Over time, the miniaturised follicle stops producing the usual thick hair.

Mid 2024

At the start of the 2024/2025 season, he sported a closely shaved hairstyle. In a very uncharacteristic style, his usual curly hairstyle was now gone, making the recession at the temples and around the frontal hairline more visible.

The change in hairstyle caused a lot of speculation about the possibility of a hair transplant being done in mid-2024. If a hair transplant was actually done by Mo Salah, the start of the 2024/25 season is likely to be weeks or a couple of months after the procedure was completed. 

Late 2024 and 2025

Around this time, his hairline appeared to be noticeably fuller, lower, and well-defined. His hair density around the temples looked noticeably better than it had a couple of years earlier.

He had a stellar performance in the season, with many people linking the speculated hair transplant with the improved performance. Many patients report improved confidence after having a hair transplant, so this could have contributed to his improved performance if true.

Based on the clinical review of publicly available photographs, there is an indication of progression of hair loss around the temples. 

But, more importantly, the sudden change is indicative of hair restoration, which is unlikely to be caused by medical treatments such as Minoxidil or Finasteride, which can slow and partially reverse early thinning, but not to the extent seen here.

Clinical review of available pictures of his scalp and low haircut in 2024 indicates a potential low shave or unshaven FUE hair transplant technique was used.  This typically requires more skill and takes more time to complete compared to the full-shaven FUE ³.
