A crown hair transplant can cost anywhere between £4,000 to £10,000. The price is primarily dependent on how many grafts you require for your transplant. Clinics will charge different prices dependent on a number of factors. In this article we will go through the main considerations when it comes to the cost of a crown hair transplant, including:
- How much hair loss have you had in your crown?
- How dense do you want your hair to be in your crown?
- Do you want an unshaven FUE hair transplant (UFUE) for your crown?
- The surgeon's experience and skill
"Crown hair transplants are less common that hairline transplants but are still frequently requested. Crowns can be deceivingly large and I always recommend my patients come in to see me so I can provide them an accurate cost for their crown hair transplant"
Dr Dilan Fernando, Hair Transplant Surgeon and Director at The Treatment Rooms London
Crown Hair Transplant Surgery
A crown hair transplant involves transplanting grafts (hair) from the back and sides of the scalp to a crown. There are 2 main techniques for extracting the hair:
- FUE Hair Transplant Surgery- this involves cutting each hair individually out and relocating them into the crown
- FUT Hair Transplant Surgery- this involves cutting a strip of skin from the back of the head, and then using this hair to transplant into the crown
Crown hair transplant cost
The main factor in determining the cost of a crown hair transplant is the total area that needs to be covered. Crowns tend to be much larger in surface area than a receding hairline or temple and patients can expect the area to require a much larger number of grafts. As a result, the cost of surgery in the crown tends to be higher than in other areas of the scalp. At The Treatment Rooms London, the cost will range between £4,000 to £10,000 for a crown hair transplant. This will cover surgeries that require between 500-2000 grafts. You can see a collection of crown hair transplants in our patient gallery.
How much crown hair loss have you had and how does this affect the cost?
If you have lost a minimal amount of hair in your crown, you will require less hair to be transplanted. This will mean the overall cost of your crown hair transplant is lower. Such cases can be seen here: crown hair transplants 500-1000 grafts. The price for such surgery can range between £3,000- £5,000. An example of small hair transplant can be seen below.
Medium size crown hair transplant cost
The more hair you have lost in your crown the larger the surgery you may require. As a result, the cost of a medium-sized crown hair transplant will be higher. Such cases can be found here: crown hair transplants 1000-1700 grafts. The price for such surgery can range between £5,000- £7,000. An example of medium-sized hair transplant can be seen below:
Large size crown hair transplant cost
Patients who lost an extensive amount of hair in the crown will require a large transplant to cover the area. They may also require 2 sessions of surgery in the crown to achieve respectable coverage. Such cases can be found here: crown hair transplants 1700-2000 grafts and crown hair transplants 2000+ grafts. The price for such surgery can range between £7,000- £10,000. An example of large sized hair transplant can be seen below:
How dense do you want your hair to be in your crown?
Crown hair transplants don't tend to give results as thick and dense as hairline or temple hair transplants. This is due to the optics of looking at the crown. A crown is looked "down" on to with the eye able to see quickly the scalp underneath the hair. If you have dark-coloured hair and light-coloured skin this contrast is heightened and it makes it easier to see the scalp through the hair.
There is a limitation of how dense a crown transplant can be made and so you will likely see the scalp through hair following surgery unless you opt to plan a second surgery to help obscure your crown more. If you opt for a denser result in your crown you will likely need 2 sessions of surgery and this will therefore increase the cost of your crown hair transplant.
Do you want an unshaven FUE hair transplant (UFUE) for your crown?
Some patients choose to undergo an unshaven hair transplant to the crown. This will allow surrounding hair to cover the crown and the areas that have been operated on. This can enable patients to return to work and social commitments quicker. Such cases tend to be small in size.
Most crowns will need to be shaved to facilitate surgery and the only areas that can be left unshaved is a rim of hair around the crown and the hair in the hairline. This can still allow patients to comb their hair back and conceal their crown giving them extra discretion.
Choosing to have an unshaven hair transplant on the crown will tend to cost more as the surgery is more time-consuming for your Surgeon. As a result, you can expect an unshaven crown hair transplant to cost more than a regular crown hair transplant where the whole head is shaved.
The Surgeon's experience and skill in performing crown hair transplants
The cost for a crown hair transplant will also depend on a Surgeon's experience, skill and how involved they are in your surgery.
At The Treatment Rooms London, our hair transplant Surgeons perform crown hair transplants regularly and have a wealth of experience planning and operating on a crown. They are able to directly control the spiral of a crown so it matches your natural crown hair direction and flow.
Our hair transplant Surgeons carry out all major aspects of hair transplant surgery, including:
-
- Extraction of hair
-
- Re-implantation of hair using an implanter pen or the DHI method into the crown. This is particularly beneficial when directing the flow of hair from the crown's spiral
