FUT Hair Transplant
What Is A FUT Hair Transplant?
An FUT hair transplant involves cutting a strip of scalp with the hair follicles intact from the back of the head. The follicles are the dissected under a microscope and inserted into thinning or balding areas of the scalp such as a receding hairline or temples as well as a balding crown.
The Treatment Rooms London is a hair transplant clinic that excels in providing men, women and transgender patients an FUT hair transplant procedure, giving all patients dedicated Surgeon-led care.

How does a FUT hair transplant work?
Your FUT hair transplant journey begins the moment you get in touch with our dedicated team at The Treatment Rooms London. We'll get you booked in for an initial consultation so we can explore your goals and determine how many grafts will be necessary to achieve them. We'll also discuss your health and medical history to ensure a FUT hair transplant is right for you.
On the day of your procedure, you'll be greeted by our friendly team before moving to the treatment area. First, your surgeon will draw on your new hairline and mark the areas on your scalp where the grafts will be taken from. A local anaesthetic will be applied to the scalp to numb the area being operated on and the FUT hair transplant can begin.
The hair at the graft donor site will be cut so follicles and scalp can be easily removed. Your surgeon will then cut a strip of skin from your scalp that contains the required number of follicles. The wound left behind will be closed up with stitches.
The hair follicles are carefully removed from the strip of scalp and prepared for transplantation. The extracted hair follicles can then be inserted into thinning or balding areas of your hair to create your new hairline or crown.
Once all the follicles have been transplanted, a bandage will be applied to your scalp and you'll be taken to the recovery area. Our team will also provide you with thorough aftercare advice and medication that will help with your healing journey.
The Treatment Rooms London is committed to ensuring you get your desired outcome for your hair loss condition, so our highly qualified surgeons will make sure your care is personalised to your unique needs.

FUT hair transplant vs FUE hair transplant
An FUT hair transplant is different from a FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) hair transplant. An FUT uses a strip of your scalp to remove the necessary follicles, whereas in an FUE, the hair follicles are removed individually from the scalp. An FUT procedure will leave a thin strip of scar tissue in the donor area that requires hair to be kept long to conceal. The FUT procedure also has a longer recovery period. An FUE hair transplant leaves small circular scars that are concealed even at a shorter hair length and has a shorter recovery period.
However, a FUT hair transplant has many benefits, such as:
-
- Removing lots of hair follicles at one time
- Your hair doesn't need to be shaved as much as an FUE hair transplant
FUT hair transplants mean significantly more hair can be transplanted in one procedure, helping you achieve your goals for your hair loss condition faster. FUTs may be more suitable if you have significant balding or thinning around your crown as it can offer you enhanced coverage and fullness.
Our team will talk you through all the benefits of your FUT hair transplant so you can be confident in your procedure and journey with The Treatment Rooms London. A dedicated article on this topic can be read here: FUT vs FUE.

"If you are concerned about your hair, like a lot of guys are, getting in touch with The Treatment Rooms and making that change is the best thing I’ve ever done for my confidence"

How many grafts are needed for a FUT hair transplant?
The number of grafts needed in your FUT hair transplant will depend on your needs. Each graft we take from your scalp will have one to four hair follicles on it. We can take up to 3,000 grafts per treatment. The minimum number of grafts taken is 500. The general number of grafts taken is 1500-3000 but this can vary depending on your needs.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all when it comes to the number of grafts used in a FUT hair transplant. However, we would say on average that 1500-2000 grafts provide our patients with the end results they're looking for.
The number of grafts right for you will be discussed during your consultation where we'll also confirm the costs based on the number of grafts needed.
Does a FUT hair transplant leave a scar?
In FUT hair transplant surgery, a linear incision is made at the back of the head to take a strip of skin and hair.
This will then be stitched together by your Surgeon. The incision will take 2-4 weeks to heal leaving a "line-like" scar at the back which is concealed with longer hair cuts.
The FUT scar is often less than 0.5cm width but can in some patients widen due to their natural scalp characteristics.
If you wanted to disguise your scar you can undergo an FUE hair transplant to implant hair into the scar or have SMP to blend the scar into the existing hair.

Are you a candidate for FUT hair transplant surgery?
An FUT hair transplant may be right for you if:
-
- You're over the age of 27
-

-
- Your a female with specific requirements around having a minimal shave hair transplant
-

Why have a FUT Hair Transplant surgery with the Treatment Rooms London?
A FUT hair transplant involves collecting strips of your hair from the back of your scalp which is then dissected into individual follicles. These units are transplanted into thinning or balding areas of your scalp. Over the course of 6 to 12 months, your hair will regrow in those areas - restoring your hairline and crown and creating a fuller appearance.
Our team of hair transplant surgeons are highly skilled in performing FUT hair transplants to achieve your desired hair restoration results.
Your FUT results should last you 20 years and possibly a lifetime. When you choose The Treatment Rooms London for your FUT hair transplant, you can be certain you're in more than capable hands and will receive bespoke, long-lasting hair restoration in keeping with your hair loss condition.

Can An FUT Hair Transplant Fail?
Careful planning and quality surgery should ensure patients are able to succeed in restoring their hairline or crown. The most common reasons we find in patients who request a hair transplant repair where their original surgery had failed are:
- Poor surgical planning
- Too many grafts taken out in a single day
- Poor quality extraction
- Poor quality implantation
- Technician-led surgery with no Surgeon involvement
- Poor quality aftercare
At The Treatment Rooms London, we have extensive experience in repair failed hair transplants and run a free repair programme for patients who have particularly suffered as a result of poor quality surgery. This includes relocating poorly implanted hair and thickening previously implanted areas as seen in the patient pictured.

How Long Does An FUT Hair Transplant Take?
The procedure takes approximately 7-9 hours to complete depending on the size of the case. The day is often split into the rough schedule below:
- Planning of the procedure (1 hour)
- Anaesthesia of donor site (30 mins)
- Extraction and suturing of donor site (1.5 hours)
- Anaesthesia of recipient site and incisions (1 hour)
- Lunch (45 mins)
- Implantation of hair (2-4 hours)
- Post-operation recovery and debrief (30 mins)
Does FUT Hair Transplant hair fall out?
The implanted hair will often fall out for the first 1-2 months after an FUT hair transplant- this is a normal part of the process. The roots that were implanted remain under the skin surface and will begin to grow after 3-4 months following the procedure. They will have grown entirely by 9-12 months and you will be able to style your hair normally.
Hair that is implanted using the FUT hair transplant technique, should last 10-20 years or longer.

Hairline Hair Transplant FAQs
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair is a technique that involves surgically removing a thin strip of a patient's scalp tissue. This mostly focuses on hair follicles from the back of the head. The hair strip is later dissected into units (grafts) under a microscope and then implanted into the area with hair loss or thinning or hair.
Due to the technique involved in the process, FUT leaves a visible linear scar at the donor site where the tiny strip was removed. The noticeable scar is a drawback for most patients as they cannot have short haircuts.
